The Pterosaurs or more commonly known as 'flying dinosaurs', lived more than several hundred million years ago. These gigantic creatures didn't have feathers, but instead very thin skin that stretched between one tremendously long finger, all the way down to it's claws. It wasn't until about 150 million years ago, when these dinosaurs evolved and had feathers.

Bird evolution:

Does this mean that birds evolved from dinosaurs? According to some scientist's this is true because of a few discoveries of different species of dinosaurs that had many characteristics to a bird.

Long after the huge meteoroid killed almost all the dinosaurs,  birds took control of the planet. Most of them were capable of eating mammals because at this time, mammals were small creatures. There were enormous flight-less birds which were called 'Terror birds' and some other birds even had a wingspan of over 6 metres long!

The ability to fly was a huge advantage because this meant that birds could travel further in search of food and live in places where no other creatures could go. After many years of evolution, many creatures did however, become extinct. About three million years ago, more than a quarter of living bird species were wiped out due to climate change. Following many hundreds of years of evolution each individual bird evolved to fit their environment, weather it was in Antarctica or in the heat in central Australia.
